Updated 2026
Glasgow has a new city-centre bathhouse from today, the biggest opening this week. There is also a new set of small-group yoga retreats in a Yorkshire stately home for 2027, a cut-down wellness retreat in north Pembrokeshire that has won planning permission at the second attempt, and building work under way on a new spa in Bowness-on-Windermere.
Atera Bathhouse and Spa opens in Glasgow: £75 for spa access
Atera Bathhouse and Spa opened in Glasgow city centre on 22 October, beneath the Radisson Blu hotel, Spa Business reported the same day. It has its own street entrance and works as a standalone day spa, with room for up to 84 guests at a time. The bathing area includes a 12m by 8m hydrotherapy pool kept at about 37°C, a ceremonial sauna for up to 30 people with sauna masters leading roughly 20-minute aufguss sessions, a Finnish sauna, a steam room, plunge pools, experience showers, a therapist-guided hammam and a rasul mud room.
Spa access costs £75 per guest and treatments are about £140 an hour, with Elemis and Comfort Zone products in six single rooms and one double. A 10 per cent discretionary service charge is added to treatments and guided experiences. The operator, BBSpa Group, expects most guests to spend about two hours in the bathhouse, or about five hours for a full day with a treatment and lunch. Monthly memberships, in three tiers with capped numbers, start at £140.
At £75 before any treatment, this is priced as a full day out rather than a quick swim and sauna, so check what is included when you book. Our spa days in Glasgow guide lists the other day spas in the city, and spa days in Scotland covers the rest of the country. Report at Spa Business.
Carlton Towers launches three-day yoga retreats for 2027, from £750
Carlton Towers, the Gothic Revival house near Selby in North Yorkshire, will host three-day wellness retreats in 2027, The York Press reported on 22 October. Each takes up to 20 guests and centres on yoga, forest bathing, meditation and massage or Reiki, led by Mariska Gunter, with sessions in the estate’s woodland and Walled Garden Vineyard, a tour of the house and locally sourced meals.
The house’s own retreats page gives four dates: 9 to 11 April, 8 to 10 June, 10 to 12 September and 25 to 27 October 2027. The price is £950 per person for a single room or £750 per person sharing, and the itinerary lists a one-hour massage treatment at £65. A smaller wellness retreat near Mathry, Pembrokeshire, is approved
Pembrokeshire County Council has approved a revised plan by Gayle Mcfarlane for a small wellness retreat at Trewallter Llwyd, about 1.3km west of Mathry, Herald.Wales reported on 15 October. The first version, refused in July, included yoga and wellness facilities, treatment rooms, a spa garden and stargazing domes. The domes have now gone, and the business is confined to converting an existing farm building for yoga, therapy and wellbeing sessions.
The project is part of a retreat concept called Seren Dawel (silent star), built around the area’s dark skies. No opening date or prices have been published. Our best wellness retreats in the UK covers places you can book now, including in Wales. Report at Herald.Wales.
The Belsfield in Bowness starts work on a new spa
The Belsfield Hotel in Bowness-on-Windermere has started measuring up for the foundations of a new spa, with part of its gardens cleared to make room, the Westmorland Gazette reported on 18 October. The Grade II listed hotel joined the Lakes Hotel and Spa and Beech Hill Hotel and Spa in January under owner Richard Berry, and is part-way through a multi-million-pound refurbishment. Earlier this month the Lake District National Park Authority also approved reopening its old Ice House pavilion as a café.
No opening date, treatment list or prices have been given yet; the hotel says it will post updates on its Facebook page. For spa hotels already open in the region, our spa hotels in the North West guide is the place to start. Report at the Westmorland Gazette.
