Most of the electricity a traditional sauna uses is spent before you get in it. The heater pulls its full rated power while it brings the cabin up to temperature, then the thermostat starts cycling and the draw drops sharply, which is why a long session costs far less than a second heat-up. What actually drives the bill

Four things decide the number, and only one of them is the heater badge on the wall.

  • Heat-up. The heater draws full rated power until the cabin reaches temperature, so a 40 minute warm-up on a 6 kW heater uses 4 kWh before anyone sits down. Two short sessions on separate evenings cost far more than one longer session, because you pay for the heat-up twice.
  • Cycling once hot. After that the thermostat switches the elements on and off, and the average draw falls to somewhere between a third and half of the rating in a well built cabin. Infrared panels are different: they are much lower powered and tend to run close to flat out, which is why their sessions are cheap despite the long-ish warm-up.
  • Insulation and where it sits. An outdoor barrel sauna in a British winter cycles much harder than the same heater in an insulated indoor cabin. That is the difference between the second and third options in the tool.
  • Your unit rate. Cost scales directly with pence per kWh, so a tariff change moves every figure above in proportion. If you are on a time of use tariff, heating during the cheap overnight or off-peak window is the single biggest saving available to you.

How the calculator works

Energy for one session is the heat-up plus the sit: heater kW multiplied by heat-up hours, plus heater kW multiplied by session hours multiplied by the cycling share you chose. That total in kWh is multiplied by your unit rate, then scaled to the week, month and year using 52 weeks. The payback figure divides what the sauna cost you by the saving on one paid visit, which is how many home sessions it takes before the build has paid for itself against what you would otherwise have spent going out. It ignores maintenance, stove stones and the value of not driving anywhere.

Treat the prefilled figures as starting points. Time your own heat-up once with a phone timer, read the kW off the heater plate and put your real unit rate in, and the answer will be close. For a more precise number, a plug-in energy monitor works on small infrared cabins, and a clamp meter or a smart meter reading before and after a session covers hard-wired heaters.

One safety note that is easy to miss when you are costing a build: traditional heaters above about 3 kW need their own dedicated circuit installed by a qualified electrician, and only the smallest plug-in infrared cabins run safely from a standard socket. Get that quoted before you fall for a heater size.
