Search for a spa day in Birmingham and most of what comes back is not in Birmingham. It is in Sutton Coldfield, in Wishaw near the M42, or out at the NEC. Those are good spas, several of them better than anything inside the ring road, but they are a car journey or a train ride away, and finding that out at the booking stage ruins an afternoon. The other thing to sort out before booking: a leisure club with a sauna is not a spa. Plenty of Birmingham hotels advertise “spa facilities” that amount to a gym pool and a steam cabinet shared with members doing lengths. The venues below have a proper wet side, treatment rooms and a relaxation space you are allowed to occupy for the afternoon.

In the city: Amala Spa at the Hyatt Regency

Amala Spa sits inside the Hyatt Regency on Broad Street, and it is the genuine city-centre option. You can walk to it from New Street in about fifteen minutes, which no other spa on this page can claim.

What is actually there:

• Five therapy rooms, described by Hyatt as a private urban day spa rather than a hotel leisure suite.
• A Turkish hammam, plus a separate private hammam treatment room where traditional Turkish therapies are applied in a warm steam environment. This is the thing Birmingham has that most British cities do not.
• A heated indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, whirlpool and a cold water plunge pool.
• A gym and cardiovascular room, included with spa day access.

Non-residents can book. Day access covers the pool, sauna, steam room, whirlpool and gym, and spa days include robes, slippers and towels, so you do not need to pack footwear the way you do at some northern spas. Book Amala if you want a spa afternoon without leaving the city, want the hammam, or are combining it with a night out on Broad Street. Book elsewhere if you want grounds, a view, or an outdoor pool.

Twenty minutes out: Santai Spa at Resorts World

Santai Spa is at Resorts World by the NEC, and it is the easiest non-city spa to reach without a car: Birmingham International station is a short covered walk away, and the trains from New Street take about ten minutes.

The facility list is the widest on this page for the money:

• An outdoor hot tub, which is rare in the West Midlands and the main reason to pick Santai in winter.
• Indoor pool, sauna and leisure club.
• Mosaic hot stone loungers in the relaxation area.
• A float therapy pod, bookable separately from treatments.
• Treatment rooms running a full spa menu, and packages that pair a treatment with afternoon tea.

The spa runs long hours, 7am to 10pm, which makes it the practical choice if you want an evening spa session after work rather than a full day. Non-residents book spa days directly.

The trade-off is the setting. Resorts World is a leisure complex with a casino, a cinema and outlet shops attached. Inside the spa it is calm; getting to it, you walk through a shopping centre. If atmosphere matters more to you than facilities, read on.

Three venues dominate the “spa day Birmingham” results and none of them are in the city. All three are genuinely good, and all three want a car or a taxi.

The Belfry, Wishaw. The biggest spa in the area and the only one with a proper thermal journey. Its spa is built around the Fire & Ice experience, a biothermal sequence of rooms that includes an Aroma Cave and a hydrotherapy pool, alongside a sauna, steam room, whirlpool spas, a swimming pool and a relaxation lounge. Treatments run on ESPA and Dermalogica. It is roughly half an hour from the city by road, just off the M42, and it is busy: book well ahead for weekends.

New Hall Hotel & Spa, Sutton Coldfield. The one to pick for setting. New Hall is a moated manor house, and the grounds do a lot of the work. The spa side is smaller than the Belfry’s: a pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, gym and tennis court, with three treatment rooms using Comfort Zone and Mii products. Choose it for a quiet, pretty half-day rather than a facilities marathon.

Moor Hall Hotel & Spa, Sutton Coldfield. Moor Hall has a refurbished pool area with a new sauna, steam room and spa bath, four treatment rooms, a gym and an aerobics room. The detail that sets it apart is a relaxation room reserved for spa day and spa break guests only, so you are not sharing the quiet space with the leisure club. Spa day lunch is served in the lounge bar or on the terrace over the parkland.

Choosing between them

For a spa day for two, the practical split is this. If it is a treat before an evening out, Amala. If one of you wants an outdoor hot tub and you are travelling by train, Santai. If you want the full day with a thermal circuit and a long lunch, the Belfry. If you want to be somewhere beautiful and mostly left alone, New Hall or Moor Hall.

Booking notes that save an afternoon

1. Check the access window, not just the price. Most West Midlands spa days run a fixed arrival time in the morning with facility use until early evening. Turning up at two o’clock on a spa day booking usually means you have already lost half of it.
2. Confirm whether treatments include thermal access. At several venues an express treatment does not buy you the wet side.
