The Spa at Carden, Carden Park, near Chester
If your ideal spa day is spent outdoors moving between hot water and cold air, Carden is the strongest answer in Cheshire. The Spa at Carden is built around one of the largest spa gardens in the UK, with an outdoor heated pool, hot tubs and firepits, plus a panoramic sauna and outdoor vitality pool, backed indoors by a full thermal suite, an indoor vitality pool and relaxation spaces.
Packages are structured as morning, afternoon or full day, each including food, with treatments as an optional add-on rather than the centrepiece. That structure suits the venue: the garden is the reason to come, and a 50-minute treatment is a bonus rather than the point.
Two practical notes. The spa operates a strict over-18s policy, so this is not the one for a family visit. And because so much of it is outdoors, weather changes the day more than at any other Cheshire spa, though the facilities are built to be used year-round.

Champneys Mottram Hall, Mottram St Andrew

Crewe Hall Hotel & Spa, Crewe
A Grade I listed Jacobean mansion attached to a modern wing, which is an unusual combination and works better than it sounds. The spa runs six treatment rooms using ELEMIS, with an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, spa bath, whirlpool, ice fountain, experience shower and a relaxation room, plus a gym and studio.
It is a smaller facility than Carden or Mottram, and priced accordingly. The draw is the building and the grounds, roughly ten minutes from Crewe centre and easy to reach by train, which makes it one of the few genuinely car-free spa days in Cheshire.
Best for: a treatment-led day in a striking setting, and anyone travelling by rail.
Spa by Kasia, Grosvenor Pulford, near Chester
Spa by Kasia takes an East Asian direction that nothing else in the county attempts: an Asian sensory garden with a koi pond, waterfall and tea house, winding paths, and treatments drawing on ELEMIS and Medik8 among others. Leisure facilities include a swimming pool, steam room and sauna.
Every spa day includes a welcome tour, an arrival tea ritual, robe and slippers, lunch and full facility access, and the packages are built around what you want rather than sold as fixed tiers. That flexibility is genuinely useful if one of your group wants three treatments and another wants none.
Best for: couples, and anyone who wants the setting to be the memorable part. It is a few minutes south of Chester.
Rookery Hall Hotel & Spa, Nantwich
An 1816 house in 38 acres, with seven treatment rooms, a Rasul mud therapy chamber, a manicure and pedicure suite, a relaxation room and a glass-roofed 17-metre indoor pool. It has held a five bubble rating from the Good Spa Guide for years, which is a meaningful signal in a county with a lot of hotel leisure clubs calling themselves spas.
Best for: a quieter, more traditional country-house day, and specifically for the Rasul, which is a shared mud chamber ritual and works well for two people.
DoubleTree by Hilton Chester
The former Hoole Hall, an 18th century manor in 12 acres about three miles from Chester city centre. The spa side is larger than the hotel branding suggests: fourteen treatment rooms, indoor and outdoor pools, a thermal suite and a mud rasul, with ELEMIS, Pevonia and Jessica product lines.
Best for: the closest thing to a Chester city spa day, and the practical choice if you are staying in Chester without a car, since buses run from outside and a taxi to the centre takes about ten minutes.
