Spa Days in the West Midlands: Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire Picks

By the Carefree Retreat team

Updated 2026

If you want spa days in Warwickshire or the wider Midlands, you are spoilt for choice: this part of the country packs in grand Victorian hotels, country-house retreats and one of the largest spas in Europe, all within an easy drive of Birmingham, Coventry and the East Midlands cities. We have pulled together the venues across Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire that genuinely earn a day out, whether you want a serious thermal circuit, an adults-only escape, or somewhere you can bring the family. Facilities and packages change, so always confirm current details when you book.

Warwickshire

The Spa at Ardencote, Claverdon. A long-standing favourite tucked into the Warwickshire countryside near Warwick, Ardencote is an independent four-star hotel whose spa sits in a former Victorian coach house. A £1.5 million development a few years ago refreshed the facilities, and it is one of the few local spas with a dedicated adults-only zone, which makes it a good pick if peace and quiet are the whole point. Day packages and treatment-plus-lunch deals are its bread and butter.

Elan Spa at Mallory Court, near Leamington Spa. For a more polished, romantic day, Mallory Court is hard to beat. The spa has been awarded five bubbles by the Good Spa Guide, therapists use GAIA and Temple Spa products, and the whole thing is set in the wooded grounds of a country-house hotel within reach of Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon. It suits special occasions and couples rather than a rowdy group.

Macdonald Alveston Manor, Stratford-upon-Avon. A Tudor-style manor a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Stratford, this is the option to combine a spa treatment with a day of Shakespeare-country sightseeing. Handy if you want the spa to be part of a wider day out rather than the sole event.

Staffordshire

Hoar Cross Hall, near Burton upon Trent. If you only do one big spa day in the Midlands, this is the headline act. Run by Barons Eden, Hoar Cross Hall has one of the largest spa facilities in the UK, with dozens of treatment rooms and a Spa Terrace that adds outdoor spa pools, private cabanas and a wood-fired Juniper Log sauna to the usual thermal circuit. It is built for a full day of moving between pools, saunas and relaxation rooms, and the day packages include a lot for the money. Book well ahead, as it is popular.

Alton Towers Spa. A more unusual entry, and a genuinely useful one for families. The spa at the Alton Towers resort lets parents unwind on a proper spa circuit while children enjoy the theme park and waterpark nearby. It is not the place for silent contemplation, but for a family trip where the grown-ups still want spa time, it works.

Derbyshire

Palace Hotel Buxton & Spa, Buxton. A grand Victorian hotel that has dominated the spa town of Buxton since 1868, set in landscaped gardens on the edge of the Peak District. The health and leisure club has an indoor pool, sauna, steam rooms and beauty treatments, and the town itself, with its thermal-water heritage, makes a pleasant base for a spa-and-explore day.

New Bath Hotel & Spa, Matlock Bath. The standout feature here is rare: a spring-fed outdoor lido filled with naturally warm, chlorine-free spring water, so you can swim outdoors year-round in this 18th-century Peak District property. The indoor spa adds a sauna, steam room, hot tub and ESPA treatments. If you want something with genuine character rather than a standard hotel leisure club, this is the one.

Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory, near Derby. A country retreat built around a 13th-century priory on a large estate, with a spa, pool and golf. It is a comfortable, reliable choice for a relaxed day close to Derby without the drive into the Peaks.

How to choose the right spa day

Think about what you actually want from the day before you book:

  • A serious thermal circuit? Hoar Cross Hall is the biggest, but Buxton and New Bath both give you heritage plus proper facilities.
  • Peace and adults-only calm? Ardencote’s adults-only zone or the romantic Elan Spa at Mallory Court.
  • A family trip? Alton Towers Spa keeps everyone happy in one place.
  • A day out plus sightseeing? Alveston Manor for Stratford, or Buxton for the Peak District town.

Two practical tips. First, midweek days are almost always cheaper and quieter than weekends, so if your diary is flexible you will get more of the spa to yourself. Second, check exactly what a “spa day” includes before you pay: some packages bundle a treatment, robe, slippers and lunch, while others are facilities-only, and the difference matters. The independent Good Spa Guide is a useful place to compare ratings and read honest reviews of these venues.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best spa for a spa day in Warwickshire? For a polished, romantic day, the five-bubble Elan Spa at Mallory Court near Leamington Spa is the standout. For a relaxed country-house feel with an adults-only zone, Ardencote at Claverdon is the long-standing local favourite. Both offer treatment-and-lunch day packages.

What is the biggest spa in the Midlands? Hoar Cross Hall in Staffordshire has one of the largest spa facilities in the UK, with dozens of treatment rooms and an outdoor Spa Terrace featuring spa pools, cabanas and a wood-fired sauna. It is built for a full day of thermal bathing and is the region’s headline spa.

Are there spa days in the Peak District? Yes. Palace Hotel Buxton & Spa sits in the spa town of Buxton on the edge of the Peak District, and New Bath Hotel & Spa in Matlock Bath has a rare spring-fed outdoor lido of naturally warm spring water. Both combine heritage settings with modern spa facilities.

Can you do a family-friendly spa day in this area? Yes. Alton Towers Spa in Staffordshire is designed so adults can enjoy a proper spa circuit while children go to the theme park and waterpark. Most country-house spas, by contrast, aim for a quieter adult atmosphere, so check the venue’s policy before booking with children.

Are midweek spa days cheaper? Usually, yes. Midweek days tend to be both cheaper and quieter than weekends at most Midlands spas, so if your schedule allows it you will typically get better value and a more relaxed experience. Always confirm current package details directly with the venue when you book.
