Three spa openings in the diary this month, and they are three very different propositions. Matfen Hall opens Aurelius, its new spa, on 15 September

Matfen Hall, the five-star country house hotel in Northumberland, set 15 September as the launch date for its new spa, and its spa pages now take bookings for spa days and stays. It marks the final phase of a £50 million, six-year renovation of the Grade II listed estate. The hotel’s own site and trade coverage now call it Aurelius.

It doubles the footprint of the former spa. The water and heat side is an 18-metre indoor pool, a jacuzzi, a Brass Monkey ice bath, a Himalayan salt sauna, a traditional sauna and an aromatherapy steam room, with an outdoor vitality pool and sensory garden. The headline additions are the medical-style therapies: whole-body cryotherapy at temperatures as low as minus 110°C, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and red light therapy. There are six treatment rooms, a gym, and a Pilates and yoga studio.

For a buyer, the question is whether you want the circuit or the kit. Parade Hotel Bath opens on 21 September with a courtyard spa

The Parade Hotel Bath opens to guests on 21 September 2026 after a major refurbishment of three Grade I listed Georgian townhouses on North Parade, formerly the Parade Park Hotel. It has 49 bedrooms, run by Providence Hotels, which also operates The Kennard in Bath.

The Courtyard Spa is small and contrast-led: a sauna, a cold plunge, a hot tub, an outdoor shower, heated loungers and a single treatment room, with treatments from Bath-based Natural Spa Factory. Three Spa Garden Rooms have living grass roofs and direct access to the spa. A self-guided Rasul ritual with scrubs, muds and face masks is listed as arriving in October 2026 at £65 per person for 45 minutes. The restaurant follows in a second phase towards the end of 2026, so for now dining is breakfast and the 1748 Bar and Lounge.

This is a city break with a spa attached, not a spa break. Cowdray House announces a 420sqm spa, for house guests only, from November

Cowdray House, the 22-bedroom historic house on the Cowdray Estate in West Sussex, announced on 9 September that it will open a new spa in November 2026. It extends the house’s existing indoor pool into a 420 square metre spa with a Technogym gym and weights area, treatment rooms, a yoga and Pilates studio, a sauna, a steam room, an outdoor hydrotherapy pool, an ice bath, and indoor and outdoor relaxation areas.

The catch is access. The spa is available exclusively to guests of the house, which is marketed as an exclusive-use country house. British skincare brand Wildsmith is the spa partner, with a menu that includes a Rebalancing Massage, a Recovery Massage, a Radical Botany Facial and a Cowdray Wildsmith Sauna Therapy ritual created for the house. Guests also get a wellness programme covering personal training, guided outdoor running, yoga, Pilates and forest bathing.
