Spa Breaks Near London: 9 Within 35 Miles, Train Times
By the Carefree Retreat team
Updated 2026
The best spa breaks near London are the ones you can actually reach on a Friday evening without a car. Every list of spa hotels “near London” gives you the same names; almost none tells you which London terminus to go to, how long the train takes, or whether there is a taxi rank when you get off. That last mile is what decides whether a one-night break feels like a rest or a logistics exercise.
This list takes nine overnight spa hotels between 15 and 35 miles from central London, ordered by distance, and gives each one’s route in. Distances are straight-line miles from Charing Cross; journey times are the fastest regular services we found and will vary through the day, so check National Rail for your train before you book a treatment time.
The nine at a glance
| Spa hotel | Miles from London | Train from | Fastest train | Station to hotel |

| Down Hall, Hatfield Heath, Essex | 25 | Liverpool Street to Bishop’s Stortford | under 1 hour | about 5 miles |
| Pennyhill Park, Bagshot | 27 | Waterloo to Bagshot (via Ascot) | around 1 hour | about 1 mile |
| Champneys Tring, Herts | 28 | Euston to Tring | 35 to 41 min | about 2 miles |
| South Lodge, Lower Beeding, Sussex | 35 | Victoria to Horsham | 55 to 57 min | about 4 miles |
Station-to-hotel distances are straight-line from our own map check; by road they are a little longer. In every case except Coworth Park, Pennyhill Park and Sopwell House, the last leg is a taxi you should book before you travel.
Under 20 miles: there before the kettle boils
Rowhill Grange and Utopia Spa, Wilmington, Kent
The closest spa hotel on this list sits in countryside near Dartford, inside the M25. Its Utopia Spa is the reason to go: split-level, Roman-style pools, several steam rooms, whirlpools and a long run of treatment rooms including couples’ suites. It suits a couple who want the thermal side of a spa more than a grand country house. Our Kent spa hotels page compares it with Eastwell Manor and the rest of the county.
Getting there: Southeastern trains from Victoria to Swanley, then a taxi of about two miles. Driving from south east London, it is just off the M25 at junction 3.
Sopwell House, St Albans
A Georgian house in 12 acres on the edge of St Albans, with the family-run Cottonmill Spa built around a 14.5 metre pool, a jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and experience showers. It has a separate children’s pool, so it is not an adults-only escape, but it is the easiest of the nine to combine with a walk: St Albans Cathedral and the Roman remains at Verulamium Park are close by.
Getting there: Thameslink from St Pancras to St Albans City in under half an hour, then about a mile to the hotel. With light luggage, you can walk it.
The Grove, Chandler’s Cross, Hertfordshire
A large five-star estate near Watford whose Sequoia Spa has a 22 metre black mosaic-tiled pool and 18 treatment rooms. It is polished and busy rather than hushed, and it has the shortest train ride of any big spa hotel near London. Before you book, read our Sequoia Spa at The Grove page: which package you buy decides whether you get into the Walled Garden and Ralph’s Beach.
Getting there: Euston to Watford Junction in 20 to 30 minutes, then a taxi of about three miles.
20 to 30 miles: the Thames Valley and the Essex border
Coworth Park, Ascot
A Dorchester Collection hotel in parkland near Ascot racecourse, with an eco-luxury spa built partly into the ground. Coworth is the pick on this list when the treatment and the setting matter more than a big pool. It is also the one place here where the station is close enough that arriving on foot is realistic.
Getting there: South Western Railway from Waterloo to Sunningdale, fastest trains about 50 minutes; the hotel is about a mile away.
Cliveden House, Taplow
The Italianate house above the Thames, in the National Trust’s Cliveden estate, is a five-star hotel with its own spa: an indoor pool, a heated outdoor pool of about 18 metres, outdoor hot tubs, an infrared sauna, steam room and seven treatment rooms. The outdoor pool is the famous one from the Profumo affair, and swimming in it on a cold evening with steam rising is the reason most people book.
Getting there: The Elizabeth line from Paddington to Taplow takes 30 to 36 minutes. The National Trust says there are no public buses to Cliveden and no taxi rank at the station, so book a car in advance for the last two and a half miles. Our Windsor and St Albans spa days page covers Cliveden’s neighbours along the river.
Down Hall, Hatfield Heath, Essex
A Victorian Italianate mansion just inside Essex with two separate spas, which is rare. Eden Spa is the wet one, with a hydrotherapy pool kept at 36°C, a steam room, a sauna and a terrace; the Barn Spa is treatments only, with no pool. Check which spa your package uses, because the difference matters if you want to swim. More detail in our Essex spa days guide.
Getting there: Greater Anglia from Liverpool Street to Bishop’s Stortford in well under an hour, then a taxi of about five miles. Stansted Airport is close, which is handy if you are flying out the next day.
Pennyhill Park, Bagshot, Surrey
The spa with the most water on this list: a 25 metre Ballroom Pool with underwater music, a hydrotherapy pool, indoor and outdoor pools, thermal suites, a herbal sauna and an ice igloo. The spa is for over-16s, except that families staying overnight can use the outdoor pool with younger children in summer. Our Surrey spa days page compares it with Beaverbrook and Foxhills.
Getting there: Trains from Waterloo to Bagshot usually need a change at Ascot and take around an hour; the hotel is about a mile from the station.
Champneys Tring, Hertfordshire
Not a hotel with a spa but a health resort in 170 acres, where the stay is all inclusive and built around a daily timetable of up to 20 exercise classes, plus meals and treatments. Pick it if an empty afternoon in a robe sounds dull and you would rather be in a yoga class or out on a walk. Our wellness retreats near London page compares it with quieter options.
Getting there: London Northwestern trains from Euston to Tring in 35 to 41 minutes, then a taxi of about two miles.
Just over 30 miles: worth the extra half hour
South Lodge, Lower Beeding, West Sussex
The newest big spa on the list, and the most striking building: 44,000 square feet set into the Sussex countryside under a grass roof, with indoor and outdoor pools, a natural wild swimming pool, a thermal experience and a zero-waste spa restaurant, Botanica. If you can only do one special-occasion spa break this year and want something that looks unlike a standard hotel spa, this is it. Our Sussex spa days page has the alternatives nearby.
Getting there: Southern from Victoria to Horsham, fastest trains about 55 minutes, then a taxi of about four miles.
