Most Glass House Retreat reviews describe a plant-based, alcohol-free detox in the Essex fields. That was true when they were written. The retreat’s own menus now tell a different story: the food menu on its website, dated June 2026, includes chicken, fish and eggs, and the May 2026 drinks list carries wine, prosecco and beer. If a strict vegan, booze-free week is the reason you are booking, that is the first thing to check. This Glass House Retreat review is built from the retreat’s own pages and menus, read on 26 October 2026, alongside press and guest reviews. We have not stayed, and we say where the picture is unclear.

The Glass House Retreat in one paragraph

The Glass House Retreat is a purpose-built wellness retreat and spa on Harrow Road, Bulphan, in Essex (RM14 3BP), which it describes as less than an hour from central London. You can stay from two nights to 21 nights or longer, or come for a one-night spa break or a spa day. Unlike fixed-programme retreats, nothing is compulsory: there is a daily timetable of classes, walks and talks, and you pick what you want. The retreat’s own FAQ page sets out most of the house rules. Three meal plans run alongside, from balanced meals to a juice-led plan, and you can switch between them.

How it has changed since the older reviews

A Hello! magazine review from August 2024 described the menu as completely plant-based and the retreat as alcohol- and caffeine-free, with handing in your phone optional. Several guest reviews from that period say the same.

The current documents on the retreat’s site do not match that:

  • Food: the June 2026 menu includes eggs, salmon, chicken supreme and king prawns, with vegan versions of many dishes marked.
  • Drinks: the May 2026 drinks list includes prosecco, wine graded by body, beers, iced coffee and an alcohol-free prosecco.
  • Afternoon tea: the food page offers a prosecco upgrade.

What the site does not say is which of those items reach staying guests on each plan, and which are aimed at spa day visitors. If you want the stay to be vegan or alcohol-free, ask the retreat directly when you book.

The three meal plans

From the retreat’s food page:

  • Equilibrium: three varied meals a day, built around balanced, sustainable eating.
  • Lighter choices: three meals a day with balanced macros, each around 600 calories, with no refined, artificial or processed ingredients.
  • Pure Juicing: vitamin and mineral juices for breakfast and lunch, soup for dinner, and an optional daily protein shake.

You choose from a menu for your plan at each meal, and the FAQ says you can switch plans at reception at no extra cost. All meals are eaten in the dining room; there is no room service. Tell the retreat about allergies and dietary needs when you book.

A typical day

The retreat publishes a sample timetable, with the warning that classes change with the season and the staff on duty:

Time Activity
07:30 Hot water and lemon
07:45 Countryside walk
09:00 Breakfast
10:00 to 12:15 Mindfulness, then strength, cardio, flexibility and aqua or dance classes
13:00 Lunch
14:00 to 17:30 Mindfulness, crafts, cardio, core or aqua, flexibility class, food demo, workshop
19:00 Dinner
20:15 Restorative entertainment

The class list covers several yoga styles, aerial yoga, Pilates, barre, HIIT, Box Fit, circuits, weights, core and aqua classes, plus sound baths, meditation and life coaching. Personal training can be booked between 8.30am and 6.30pm. This suits someone who wants a full day of fitness on offer but the freedom to skip it and lie by the pool. It suits less well someone who wants a teacher-led yoga immersion with a fixed group; for that, see our best yoga retreats in the UK.

Facilities and treatments

  • Indoor heated pool (4ft deep), steam room and a Himalayan salt block sauna, open 8am to 7pm
  • A natural swimming pond with an outdoor sauna beside it
  • An outdoor hot tub and a geodesic wellness dome for meditation and workshops
  • Gym, fitness studio and holistic studio
  • The Hideaway, an area reserved for staying guests
  • A cryotherapy chamber, which needs a health assessment and signed paperwork first

The spa runs 9.30am to 6.30pm. Treatments include massage, facials, colon hydrotherapy, reiki and a range of body treatments. The retreat advises booking treatments before you arrive, and it has a free app for scheduling them.

Rooms

All rooms are en-suite with Wi-Fi, a 49-inch smart TV and a digital detox safe for your phone:

  • Superior Double: about 26 square metres, two double beds, walk-in shower
  • Superior King: about 26 square metres, super king bed, walk-in shower
  • Premier Double: about 35 square metres, two king beds, bath with shower or walk-in shower; an accessible version has a large walk-in shower
  • Premier Suite: about 35 square metres, super king bed, bath, lounge and dining area, mini fridge

Booking terms to read before you pay

  • Payment: booking direct, the FAQ says all bookings are paid in full at the time of booking.
  • Cancelling or moving: with more than 30 days’ notice, you can move or cancel for an admin fee per guest. With less, you lose what you paid, with no exceptions, though you can send someone in your place. Take out travel insurance.
  • Sharing: the FAQ offers a discount for a second person sharing a room.
  • Arrival: check-in from 2.30pm to 5pm; check-out by 11am, with use of the facilities until 4pm.
  • Age: guests must be 16 or over, and under-18s must be with an adult.
  • ID: the lead booker needs photo ID matching the card used.

Terms on third-party booking sites can differ from booking direct, so read the terms of whichever route you use.

Getting there

The nearest station is West Horndon, a short drive away, on the line from London Fenchurch Street. Upminster, served by the District line and c2c trains, is a little further. There is free parking on site.

What guests say

On BookRetreats, where the retreat lists its stays, it holds a rating of 4.84 from 382 reviews at the time of writing, most of them five stars. Guests praise the staff, the facilities and the food. The critical reviews are worth reading too: one mixed review mentions a rushed, short treatment, a busy lounge and limited sauna space. Day spa guests share the site, so the pool and sauna can be busier than a residential-only retreat.

Who it suits

The Glass House suits someone near London who wants a flexible, comfortable reset: classes all day if you want them, a pool and pond, and a meal plan that does the thinking for you. It is less suited to anyone who wants a small closed group, a single teacher, or a guaranteed vegan and alcohol-free environment. For quieter, more structured options, compare our burnout retreats, Pilates retreats and the Yeotown review. For a day visit in the county, see our Essex spa days.
