Best Spa Hotels UK: 8 Award Winners and Standouts

The best spa hotels in the UK are not simply the most expensive ones. The places worth a special trip each have something you can check before you book: an outdoor infinity pool over a lake, a thermal area big enough that it never feels crowded, real hot spring water, or an independent award from people who visit spas for a living. This list picks eight that clear that bar, across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

We have leaned on the most recent Good Spa Guide Awards as an outside check, because its winners are chosen by a mix of public vote and a judging panel rather than by the hotels themselves. The 2025 winners are the latest; the 2026 results are due at a ceremony on 16 November 2026, and we will update this page when they are out.

The eight at a glance

The Gainsborough Bath Spa Bath, Somerset The only hotel spa using Bath’s thermal springs
Ragdale Hall Leicestershire Best Spa for Wellness 2025; a spa first, hotel second

St Brides Spa Hotel Saundersfoot, Wales Infinity-edge hydro pool over Carmarthen Bay
Galgorm Ballymena, Northern Ireland A 75,000 sq ft riverside Thermal Spa Village

The Woodland Spa at Crow Wood, Burnley

The Woodland Spa won Best Hotel Spa at the Good Spa Guide Awards 2025, its latest in a run of wins in that category. It sits in woodland on the edge of Burnley, part of the Crow Wood Hotel & Spa Resort, and a £16 million expansion has nearly doubled its size, adding infinity spa pools, firepits and outdoor swimming. It also lists a World Luxury Spa Award for its thermal area on its own site. It proves the best spa hotel in Britain does not have to be in the Cotswolds or the Home Counties, and it is usually better value than spas of a similar standard further south. Our Lancashire spa days guide covers day visits.

Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa, Borrowdale

Lodore Falls was the Good Spa Guide’s Best Destination Spa in 2025, and the reason is outside: a 16-metre outdoor infinity-edge hydrotherapy pool with views over Derwentwater. Inside, the thermal suite lists twelve heat experiences, alongside a rasul for four. The hotel sits at the foot of the Lodore waterfall a few miles south of Keswick, so a day on the fells and an evening in the pool is the natural rhythm of a stay. Children are not allowed in the spa.

Pennyhill Park, Bagshot

Pennyhill Park’s spa is one of the largest at any British hotel, and the place to go if you want to spend a whole day in the water without repeating yourself. Spa guides list a 25-metre ballroom pool with underwater music, a hydrotherapy pool, outdoor pools and Canadian hot tubs, plus a thermal area with herbal saunas, a laconium, a tepidarium and an ice cave, and 21 treatment rooms. It is about an hour from central London, which makes it the obvious big-spa choice for a weekend from the capital. Our Surrey spa days page has nearby alternatives.

The Gainsborough Bath Spa, Bath

Only one place in Britain has naturally warm spring water, and only one hotel taps it. The Gainsborough’s Spa Village Bath draws on the city’s original thermal springs, a few streets from Thermae Bath Spa. It is smaller than the resort spas on this list, and you come for the water and the city, not for a dozen saunas. Our luxury spa breaks page explains why that matters, and the Bath spa days guide covers Thermae for day visits.

Ragdale Hall, Leicestershire

Ragdale Hall won Best Spa for Wellness at the Good Spa Guide Awards 2025. It is a destination spa that happens to have bedrooms, rather than a hotel with a spa downstairs: most guests come for the treatments, classes and thermal spa, and the whole place runs around them. Go midweek if you want it quieter. Our Ragdale Hall guide covers packages and what to book.

Scotland: Gleneagles, Perthshire

Gleneagles is best known for golf, but its spa holds its own. Spa guides describe separate heat journeys for men and women meeting in a unisex vitality pool, with an outdoor thermal pool, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms besides the hotel’s main pools. Lying in a hot outdoor pool on a cold Perthshire evening is the point of going. See our Scotland spa days guide for more.

Wales: St Brides Spa Hotel, Saundersfoot

St Brides sits on the cliff above Saundersfoot harbour, and its Marine Spa has what it describes as Wales’ only true infinity-edge hydrotherapy pool, heated to 35 degrees and looking straight out over Carmarthen Bay. Resident sessions in the thermal suite and pool are booked in advance; check the age rule when you book, as listings differ on whether it is adults only or 16 and over. Our Wales spa days page has other options.

Northern Ireland: Galgorm, Ballymena

Galgorm’s Thermal Spa Village spreads across about 75,000 sq ft of riverside gardens, split into four areas: Riverside, Forest Spa, Alpine and Walled. There are saunas including a Celtic sauna, a snow cabin, a salt cave, indoor and outdoor pools, and wood-fired hot tubs above the River Maine that you can book privately. It holds the Good Spa Guide’s top five-bubble rating, and it is open to day guests as well as residents. Our Northern Ireland spa days page has more.

How to choose between them

  • For the outdoors: Lodore Falls, St Brides or Galgorm, where the view is the spa.
  • For sheer size: Pennyhill Park or The Woodland Spa.
  • For unique water: The Gainsborough, the only hotel on hot spring water.
  • For a proper rest with classes and treatments built in: Ragdale Hall.
  • For a quieter visit: ask any of them how many day guests they take and when. Our six checks before you book a spa break covers this and the age rules.

Prices for all of these swing a long way by date. Weekends, school holidays and December cost the most; Sunday to Thursday in January and early February is usually the cheapest time to book, as our page on when spa break prices jump shows.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best spa hotel in the UK? On the most recent independent award, The Woodland Spa at Crow Wood in Burnley, the Good Spa Guide’s Best Hotel Spa for 2025. For an outdoor setting, Lodore Falls in the Lake District, the Best Destination Spa for 2025, is the strongest rival.

Which UK spa hotel has the best outdoor pool? Lodore Falls has a 16-metre infinity-edge hydrotherapy pool over Derwentwater, and St Brides in Saundersfoot has an infinity-edge hydro pool over Carmarthen Bay. Galgorm’s riverside tubs and outdoor pools are the pick in Northern Ireland.

Is there a UK spa hotel with natural hot spring water? Yes, one: The Gainsborough Bath Spa, whose Spa Village Bath taps Bath’s original thermal springs. Thermae Bath Spa uses the same water but is a day spa, not a hotel.

When are the Good Spa Guide Awards 2026 winners announced? At a ceremony on 16 November 2026. Public voting closed at the end of August, and an independent panel judges some categories.

Can you visit these spa hotels without staying overnight? Several sell spa days, including Galgorm, Pennyhill Park and The Woodland Spa, but access, hours and treatments for day guests are often more limited than for residents. Check what a spa day includes before you compare it with an overnight package.

Are children allowed in UK spa hotels? Usually not in the thermal areas. Lodore Falls does not allow children in its spa, and St Brides is listed as adults only or 16 and over, so check when you book. Many resort spas offer family swim times in a separate pool.
